Candles have become a common household item, used to create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. However, did you know that some scented candles can be dangerous for your furry friends? While we love the aroma of vanilla, lavender or cinnamon, these scents can be toxic to dogs. As responsible pet owners, it's important to know which candle fragrances are harmful to our pups. In this blog post, we will discuss some candle scents that you should avoid if you have dogs in your home.

Citrus Scents

Citrus-scented candles contain essential oils that are harmful to dogs' respiratory systems. The oils can cause breathing difficulties, coughing and wheezing. If ingested, they can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, it's best not to use any citrus-scented candles around your pets.

Cinnamon Scents

Cinnamon is a popular scent during the holiday season but is not safe for pets. Cinnamon candles contain cinnamaldehyde which can cause skin irritation and even breathing problems if inhaled by your dog.

Eucalyptus Scents

Eucalyptus essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy due to its soothing properties; however, it's not suitable for pets because it can depress their nervous system causing lethargy or even seizures.

Pine Scents

Pine-scented candles are often used during Christmas time as a way of bringing the outside inside giving you an authentic tree-like fragrance without having one present in your home; however, such fragrances contain pine oil which can cause gastrointestinal issues like vomiting and diarrhea if ingested by your dogs

Vanilla Scents

While vanilla scent itself isn't likely dangerous to dogs when ingested, many vanilla-scented candles contain a chemical called coumarin. Coumarin can be toxic to dogs when consumed in large quantities and can cause liver damage. So it's best to avoid this scent.

Candles are an easy way to create a cozy atmosphere, but as pet owners, we should be mindful of our furry friends' safety. Always read the label carefully before buying any scented candles and avoid using harmful fragrances around your pets. If you want to enjoy the aroma of scented candles without putting your dog's health at risk, consider using unscented or soy-based candles that are less likely to contain harmful chemicals. Remember, a little extra caution goes a long way in ensuring your pet's well-being!
